COUNCIL LOUNGE RENAMED IN JAMES DAVIS' HONOR

On July 21, Speaker Gifford Miller and members of the NYC council were joined by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to honor the life of the late council member James Davis

Family of the late Councilman took part in the ceremony, which renamed City Hall’s “Members Lounge” after Mr. Davis.

”I think I speak for all of my colleagues who are her today and of every one at the city Council when I say how lucky we were to know James Davis and how much he inspired us,” said Speaker Miller. “Today’s renaming of this lounge gives us the opportunity – in a small but significant way – to give something back to a man who has made such remarkable contributions to our great City.”

Councilman Davis, a former police officer, was elected to the City Council in 2001. He lost his life in the council chambers at City Hall on July 23, 2003. He was 41 years old. He earned many achievements during his short life, including a fight that resulted in the Toys R’ Us retail chain to pull realistic looking toy guns from the shelves. Also, he held an annual march that encouraged self-love and self-respect for the community.

”This room will never replace the man who was lost, but it will remind all who knew him of his passion. It should also be a symbol, to upcoming leaders of the city, of a ma who committed his life to public service and of his enthusiasm for life and community,” said Speaker Miller.
