A record number of African Americans held key positions at the Democratic National Convention 2004, according to Blacks and the 2004 Democratic National Convention, a new report by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. In addition to Ohio congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones who is the Democratic Party co-chair and chair of the Platform Committee, Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin chaired the Credentials Committee, and New York representative Gregory Meeks chaired the Rules Committee.There are also six African American vice-chairs of the same committees. No African Americans chaired convention committees in 2000.
